The Western General Hospital has been an important part of the north Edinburgh for over 150 years and the community is important to us.
Throughout the site redevelopment, and as we work towards our longer-term site vision, we are engaging with staff, patients, neighbours and the wider community. Their views and support are extremely valuable, so that we can continue to make improvements at the Western General for the benefit of everyone.

Initial Agreement: Background
The proposal (Initial Agreement) for the new cancer care centre was informed by considerable engagement with patients, the public and staff.
Consultation events were held in November 2019, which were attended by over 160 people including those who use the hospital and community representatives.
The events showcased the ambitious programme of building works and service redesign scheduled to take place over the coming years. They also gave people an insight into the hospital’s long-term ‘Site Vision’ to ensure the delivery of high quality and sustainable health services at the Western until 2045.
Both events gave people the chance to share their views and ideas on how the Western General Hospital should develop in the future, help shape plans for the site and have their say on what the hospital should look and feel like.
Feedback from the events, including conversations, completed questionnaires and views posted on social media, were summarised into issues and themes. These were considered carefully by the project team in the development of proposals.
The consultation for the new Edinburgh Cancer Centre is cited as an example of good practice by Health Improvement Scotland.
