Creating a World Class Cancer Centre

NHS Lothian’s vision for the future is a world class regional specialist cancer centre on the Western General Hospital site.

Building on the success of the existing Edinburgh Cancer Centre, it aims to be recognised as a world leader for cancer research, innovation and clinical academic opportunities.

A new centre offers the opportunity to provide the very best cancer care and treatments and transform cancer services for patients across the South East of Scotland. The new building will be a sustainable, modern, purpose-built facility which can meet the increasing demand for cancer services, and at the same time adapt to deliver new and emerging treatments.

The centre will generate a wide range of regional and national benefits. It will help to stimulate the Scottish economy by creating jobs during construction of the building and new staff roles in the centre once it is open.

A NHS Lothian project team has developed a proposed clinical service model with regional partners (NHS Borders, NHS Dumfries and Galloway and NHS Fife) .

The proposal has been informed by extensive engagement with patients, families, staff, and other key stakeholders across the region. This exercise is cited as an example of good practice by Health Improvement Scotland.

The future service model is shaping the development of the new specialist cancer centre for the South East of Scotland. The proposal (a document called the Initial Agreement) was submitted to the Scottish Government Capital Investment Group in August 2022 for consideration. If approved the project team will develop a detailed Outline Business Case for the centre.
