NHS Lothian is committed to ensuring that all decisions, policies, and practices help to achieve equity and uphold children’s human rights. Equality and Children’s Rights Impact Assessments (ECRIA) are a tool which help us do this.
NHS Lothian has a policy so that everyone is clear about when and how we use ECRIAs to help us make decisions. Click to view the NHS Lothian ECRIA policy.
There are three key steps to completing the ECRIA process:

This webpage provides guidance and resources for completing the ECRIA process. It is also where we publish completed NHS Lothian impact assessments.
Decision to complete an impact assessment
At the project initiation stage, you must consider whether an Equality and Children’s Rights Impact Assessment (ECRIA) is required. This decision should be made using the ECRIA Initial Checklist Form.
The checklist will guide you through a series of questions to help you determine whether an ECRIA is necessary for your project.
Guiding principle – if your work is likely to impact:
- Equality
- Socio-economic disadvantage
- Children’s rights
For people who work for NHS Lothian or use NHS Lothian services, and completing an impact assessment would help NHS Lothian meet its duty to give due regard to equality and children’s rights, then an ECRIA should be carried out.
Completing an Equality and Children’s Rights Impact Assessment template
If the Initial Checklist indicates that an impact assessment is required, you must complete an Equality and Children’s Rights Impact Assessment (ECRIA) using the approved template. Click to view the ECRIA Report Template.
Guidance is available to support you in completing the template. Click to view the ECRIA Guidance.
Further support and training
If you require additional support to complete an ECRIA, you are encouraged to attend training delivered by the Equality and Human Rights Team: Learning how to do and use Equality and Children’s Rights Impact Assessments.
