LGBT+ Health Needs Assessment

The health and wellbeing of people varies significantly and is influenced by lots of different things. In Scotland, those living in poverty and in areas of deprivation consistently have poorer health outcomes. Discrimination and inequalities related to someone’s sex, ethnicity, disability and identity are also known to contribute to poorer health outcomes. This includes people who identify as lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, trans and non-binary people (LGBT+).

NHS Lothian and NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde identified that there were gaps in our knowledge about the health and wellbeing of LGBT+ people. To better inform approaches to public health for LGBT+ people we commissioned a comprehensive health needs assessment of LGBT+ people in both health board areas, looking at seven groups:

  • Lesbian and gay women
  • Gay men
  • Bisexual women
  • Bisexual men
  • Trans women
  • Trans men
  • Non-binary people

The findings from our LGBT+ health needs assessment can be found in the reports below:
