Supporting our international colleagues

NHS Lothian is committed to being an inclusive and welcoming organisation for employees, patients and visitors. As part of that we want all our international colleagues who have joined NHS Lothian to know they are welcome and appreciated in this organisation.

Tom Power, Director of People & Culture, said: “For many international colleagues, coming to a new country and joining a new organisation at the same time, can feel overwhelming and isolating, and can ultimately become a stressful experience.

“Our international colleagues, those employed by NHS Lothian and working in one of the Health and Social Care Partnerships and in Primary Care, help us meet the growing demand on health and care services. International colleagues also help us by making care more culturally appropriate, bringing diverse ideas and global experience, strengthening teamwork and empathy, and ensuring the workforce better reflects the communities it serves.

“It is important that we all go out of our way to support and welcome new colleagues, especially when new to Scotland.”

Dr. Goran Zangana, Consultant Physician and international colleague, said: “As an international doctor, my journey here was challenging at the start. I felt isolated and unsure, trying to navigate a completely new system while managing pressures at work and home, but over time, with support from colleagues and building a network, I found my place and now really value working in the NHS.

“My advice to other international staff would be; not to suffer in silence – reach out, connect with others in similar situations, look after your mental health, and remember the skills and experiences you bring are valuable and deserve to be recognised.”
