NHS Lothian Environmental Sustainability Webinar, titled ‘The Right Care is Greener: challenges and opportunities of NHS Scotland’s National Respiratory Prescribing Strategy’
Carbon emissions from inhalers typically account for around 3% of the carbon footprint of the NHS, and the propellants used in measured dose inhalers (MDI) prescribed for asthma and COPD are powerful greenhouse gases. It is essential to reduce emissions from MDIs if we are to achieve our Net Zero ambitions.
NHS Scotland and Scottish Government have been reviewing the Scottish Quality Prescribing Guide to support changes to inhaler prescribing and reduce harm to the environment, whilst maintaining patient-centred care.
This webinar gives an overview of the challenges and opportunities of changing practice, from the national perspective, from the NHS Lothian perspective and from the front line engaging with individual patients.
It covers the challenges from across the organisation, from diagnosis to treatment and the avoidance and management of waste. By setting out the environmental impact of inhalers within the context of effective treatment this webinar will explore the issues and considerations which will need to form part of our thinking and decision making in relation to prescribing and sustainable care in general.
