NHS Lothian and the local councils have specific plans to support care experienced children and young people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NHS Lothian is committed to The Promise and ensuring care experienced children and young people get the support they need. Corporate Parenting is one of NHS Lothian\u2019s priorities and is included in our strategic planning documents. This means, when NHS Lothian makes plans for the future, we include supporting care experienced children and young people. Please click the arrow to the left for more information. <\/summary>\n<p class=\"has-regular-font-size\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:400\">Corporate parenting means that different organisations work together to help children and young people who are in care. These organisations have special responsibilities to support these young people until they are 26 years old. They make sure that these kids have their rights protected and get the best chances in life. Corporate Parents are responsible for #KeepingThePromise. Corporate parents help ensure the rights of care experienced people are upheld, and that they have the best chances and outcomes in life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-regular-font-size\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:400\">A corporate parent is the name given to an organisation or person who has special responsibilities to care experienced children and young people. Those organisations include NHS Health Boards (like NHS Lothian), the police, the fire service, local authorities (including East Lothian, Edinburgh Midlothian and West Lothian), social work services, and many more. This includes kids who were adopted after living in care, who are being looked after at home or in kinship care. Please click the arrow to the left for more information.<\/summary>\n<p class=\"has-regular-font-size\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:400\">Previously, these individuals were referred to as \u201clooked after.\u201d Although &#8220;care experienced&#8221; isn&#8217;t a legal term, it&#8217;s one which&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thepromise.scot\/what-is-the-promise\/independent-care-review\">the Independent Care Review<\/a>&nbsp;heard has special meaning for many of the people who identify with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thepromise.scot\/what-is-the-promise\/care-experienced-people\">The Promise Scotland<\/a> lays out that \u201ccare experienced&#8221;&nbsp;is a term which tries to acknowledge that, for some people:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">The sense of being in care is a shared experience<\/span> | Two different care experienced people may have been in very different situations. But they may find their experiences still had a lot in common, in ways which someone who wasn&#8217;t care experienced couldn&#8217;t identify with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Care is an experience, but not one that totally defines you<\/span> | Although going into care can affect a person, it doesn\u2019t sum up everything about them. The phrase&nbsp;<em>care experienced<\/em>&nbsp;conveys this\u2014 a thing you experience doesn\u2019t convey the whole of what you are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Language should put the person it talks about at the centre<\/span> | For a long time, people talked about &#8220;looked after&#8221; children and young people. But that phrase puts the focus on the people taking care of them.&nbsp;<em>Care experienced&nbsp;<\/em>conveys it\u2019s what happens to a child that matters, because what matters is the child themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This video shares \u2018Sam\u2019s\u2019 experience of going into care and what the removal of this scaffold of support can look like in real life. It is a composite story comprised of experiences shared with Who Cares? This is called <em>Public Protection<\/em>, and it means making sure children, young people and groups of people who are at increased risk of harm get support and protection when they need it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Looking out for your safety isn\u2019t just the job of one team\u2014everyone who works for NHS Lothian has a part to play in keeping you safe and well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are rules set by the Scottish Government that help us work together with other services\u2014like social work and schools\u2014to make sure you get the right support if you ever feel unsafe. You can report a concern or seek advice in confidence.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-pb-accordion-item c-accordion__item js-accordion-item no-js\" data-initially-open=\"false\" data-click-to-close=\"true\" data-auto-close=\"true\" data-scroll=\"false\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\"><h2 id=\"at-10591\" class=\"c-accordion__title js-accordion-controller\" role=\"button\">Meet Our Care Experienced Children&#8217;s Nursing Team<\/h2><div id=\"ac-10591\" class=\"c-accordion__content\">\n<p>The Care Experienced Children and Young People\u2019s (CECYP) Nursing Service is a team of specially trained nurses that care for Care Experienced Children and Young people in the community across NHS Lothian.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We offer contact to Care Experienced Children and Young People at various locations including at home, at school or other community settings. The team offers a wide variety of nursing supports focusing on assessing and discussing Health and Well-being, setting health goals in partnership with Children and their carer\u2019s and directly with Young People, working together with other services to meet CECYP healthcare needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CECYP nurses can work with Children and Young People in a 1:1 setting.
